From the President

Welcome back, It’s a New Day!

Summer’s here and this is the time when most businesses decide to perform upgrades and maintenance to their computer networks. This can mean performing those tasks that have been put off for that rainy day, or a refresh of outdated servers, etc. While you attend your Summer time activities, we can worry about your IT projects and provide you with peace of mind knowing that these projects will be accomplished with skill and pride. So make your plans, enjoy your vacation and leave the worries of IT management with us.

Cloud Computing for
Small and Midsize Businesses

reprinted with permission from the HP Small Business Center

You’ve no doubt heard a lot about cloud computing (or the cloud). What you may not have learned is how this misty concept can help with the real problems of operating your business, especially in hard times.

In short, cloud computing offers attractive options for small and midsize businesses that need critical IT upgrades, but may lack the cash for a large capital investment.

Through the cloud, you can add new, vital applications or you can supplement the capacity of an existing infrastructure. Because cloud services are delivered via the Internet (often the Web) you only pay for the features and functionality you use and don’t pay for extra hardware, software, staff and maintenance. As a result, your business can grow its IT capabilities, often at a lower cost than doing everything itself. And you can pull the cost from your operating budget rather than your capital budget.

So what is cloud computing exactly, and why is it significant to small and midsize businesses?

What Does “the Cloud” Mean for Business?
An Industry Insight by Daptiv

There’s a lot of buzz about “cloud computing” these days. It seems like the perfect answer to many businesses challenges – no software to install, all you need is a browser, applications are secure and easy to access. But what does this mean for businesses? Should you be using consumer web tools for business? By Tim Lowe, VP of Marketing at Daptiv

The web leads the way
Consumers’ experience of the Internet has morphed radically over just the past couple of years. The Web 2.0 experience has changed how we use the Internet and changed our expectations for technology in general. We now love Flickr and Facebook, Digg and Twitter. These experiences have lead everyone that works in business (because we’re all consumers too) to re-think the nature of the tools they have at their disposal for doing work. Why do I have to struggle with my office productivity tools when the websites I use for fun, pictures, and music just work? The answer is that business technology has some more difficult challenges to solve than consumer technology. How do we make sure that data is protected? How can I allow my teams of workers access to tools they like to use, but still have some element of control that supports my company’s policies and mandates? Is it really ok to have my data stored somewhere “in the cloud”?

Some said, “It can’t be done!” But “Success comes in CANS, not in cannots!”

The first successful cast iron plow invented in the United States in 1797 was rejected by New Jersey farmers under the theory that cast iron poisoned the land and stimulated growth of weeds.

In Germany, it was “proven” by experts that if trains went at the frightful speed of 15 miles per hour, blood would spurt from the travelers’ noses, and that the passengers would suffocate going through tunnels.

Commodore Vanderbilt dismissed Westinghouse and his new air brakes for trains with the remark that he had no time to waste on fools.
