20 Years of Tech: Phone Service Then & Now

In celebration of CorCystem’s 20th anniversary, we’re looking back at technology over the years. How often do you look at your cellphone or office phone and think back to the evolution of phone service?

Let’s take a look back and compare just how different technology has become over the past two decades for both individual users and businesses.

Mobile Phone Services in 2000

In 1990, prepaid mobile phones were being offered when mobile phone operators wanted to increase their market reach and were exclusively offered on a contract-based basis.

Fast-forward into the year 2000 when the first 3G wireless digital networks were being offered. For the next three years, network operators were able to offer widespread 3G access. This also gave way to expanding the data-carrying ability even more, but mobile data was still a luxury. Data storage was measured in megabytes, not terabytes and processing power in megahertz, not gigahertz. Users would still be charged on a contract-basis and by the minute.

VoIP Phone Services in 2000

With the rise of the Internet and web communication, corporations began feeling the increased communication expenses of a VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol), especially when the government regulated VoIP communications in the same year.

Within the next year, telephone equipment companies started to realize the benefits of transferring information over IP and that having better speed, lower costs and better quality was more efficient for businesses. VoIP capabilities were then added to software and other equipment that could be integrated with VoIP. This change also meant that by the year 2003, around 25% of all voice calls were VoIP. With the inclusion of broadband Ethernet services, VoIP also had the benefit of better connectivity and call quality.

Mobile Phone Service in 2020

Over 20 years later, mobile phones are more expensive than they’ve ever been before. Flagship devices from Samsung, Google and Apple can now cost hundreds of dollars and can be priced $2,000 and above. In today’s mobile-friendly world, we now have unlimited data plans, a number of different carriers, and we’re living in a 5G world.

VoIP Phone Services in 2020

In the year 2020, VoIP services are the backbone of business communication. Companies that haven’t implemented VoIP systems, often complain of poor sound quality, and we’ve begun to critically improve VoIP’s Quality of Service (QoS).

VoIP phone services can now be used on-premises or be cloud-based and you don’t have to worry about security. When you’re running your VoIP over a private network, the data is secure and most services offer to encrypt calls.

VoIP Platforms are also incredibly scalable, meaning that there is little to no physical hardware that needs to be set up. The more your business grows, the quicker you can expand the number of users.
