What is SD-WAN?

SD-WAN is a software-defined approach to managing a wide-area network, or WAN. A WAN allows separate business branch locations to connect to each other and share resources on the network. Thanks to the introduction of the cloud and SaaS applications like Office 365, Salesforce, and Exchange Online, each branch location of a business is highly incentivized to have their own connection to the public internet. This is done for the sake of having a low-latency connection. Things become complicated when multiple network paths—MPLS, Ethernet, public internet, or LTE, to name a few—remain in a company’s WAN. Providing users the proper network path for their computer activity becomes a problem. SD-WAN was designed to solve this problem. SD-WAN hardware controllers constantly choose the proper network paths to transmit application data. Software that requires low-latency will always be provided the optimal network path with the lowest latency—ensuring that voice calls and cloud applications work perfectly.
